Recent Reading: "Brothers"

Brothers by Alex Van Halen

I saw Alex Van Halen interviewed online when this book was released and was blown away by how introspective he was. I'm old enough to remember when Van Halen was at the peak of their David Lee Roth-era heights, and they lived the rock star lifestyle to the hilt. While so many classic rockers never seem to mature past that part of their life, trying to recreate the old magic in their twilight years, Alex Van Halen seems content to rest on his laurels. One reason for that is that he understands that part of his life is in the past in ways that other rockers can't seem to let go of. Another reason he's done is loss of his brother and lifetime bandmate, guitar legend Edward Van Halen, who died in 2020.

Brothers tells the story of Van Halen's rise to superstardom, as well as the story of the two inseparable brothers who started the band and gave it its name. It starts with their early childhood in Holland, through their relocation to Pasadena, California, and particularly the importance of music in their family and upbringing. Their father was a musician and their mother wanted her sons to continue the family tradition as classical musicians. Alex also doesn't hold back on the prevalence of alcohol in their household and its later effects on him and Eddie ("I had my first drink when I was six - schnapps; my dad gave it to me.")

The book then covers how they went from immigrants who arrived not knowing any English to international rock stars, from their development as a band (those guys spent years paying their dues), their signing by Warner Bros. Records, the recording of their first five albums (Van Halen, Van Halen II, Women and Children First, Fair Warning, and Diver Down) and their wild adventures on tour.

Lead singer David Lee Roth could be a maddening combination of brilliant performer and raging egomaniac. Alex is effusive in his praise for Roth being the frontman Van Halen needed to move up to an elite level. He also gave Roth props for inviting their father, Jan Van Halen, to play clarinet on "Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now") on Diver Down. Ditto for Roth's support in changing the band's name from Mammoth to the more unique Van Halen.

But he also doesn't shy away from pointing out Roth's ego and need for attention, and the sometimes negative effect it had on the band. Still, Alex was badly upset when Roth left Van Halen because a band is a family and in the Van Halen household, you always stick with family. "It was the most disappointing thing I'd experienced in my life, the thing that seemed the most wasteful and unjust. Until I lost my brother." Still, one of the biggest surprises of the book was this: "Dave was the first guy I called after Ed passed, the first guy I wanted to talk to. Just out of mutual respect for what we had done together with my brother..." I think a lot of fans didn't even realize the Van Halens were still on speaking terms with Roth at that point. I certainly wasn't.

Bassist Michael Anthony, who wasn't mentioned once in Alex's interview, is also given short shrift here. I guess that's what you get for being the steady guy who doesn't bring the drama. But Alex does credit him for the incredible harmonies he had with Ed that became a staple of Van Halen's sound. I did find it was hilarious to learn that Van Halen played at Anthony's wedding. They were one of the biggest bands in the world and they played his wedding. Membership has its privileges, I guess.

And of course there is a lot about Ed, his musical brilliance, and the sensitivity that rendered him more susceptible to intoxicants than his older brother, who unlike Ed was eventually able to put those bad habits behind him. But in spite of his love for his brother, Alex also takes him to task when necessary, taking exception to Ed's claim that his mouth cancer issues were due to holding metal picks in his mouth, rather than his heavy smoking habit. He also wasn't thrilled when Ed decided to play his iconic guitar solo on Michael Jackson's "Beat It", because not only did he object to Ed's time, energy, and focus being taken away from Van Halen, it also set a precedent for Roth to do the solo work that contributed to his split from the band.

There's a lot of reminiscing and you really feel the overwhelming loss Ed's death has on Alex. They were probably as close of siblings as you could ever find. This is a wonderful, heartfelt memoir, and I highly recommend it.

From the book:

I know I'll see you again. And we'll jam for hours - for days. That was always our most intense from of intimacy, and you never, ever pulled rank. You never said - or even thought - "You're just the drummer, Al, and I'm the world's greatest guitarist, so we're doing it my way." We were equals, and you never forgot that. We supported each other unconditionally, no matter how much we fought. We were a team.

We were brothers. We're still brothers. Even death can't change that.

Customer Service Fail, Magazine Subscription Division

I have a bunch of magazine subscriptions. I love hard copies; digital magazines don't do it for me. I also constantly receive urgently worded renewal notices that make it sound like my subscription is expiring RIGHT NOW, only to check and discover (more often than not) that I'm nowhere near the renewal date. I get why they do this - cash flow. If you renew early, they get their money sooner. I often wonder how many people fall for that. You must be in danger of having your subscription expire, because otherwise why would the publisher be sending you an urgent renewal notice, right? (Because $$$, that's why).

But the notice I got yesterday really blew me away with not only the harsh tone, which I found unacceptable from a customer service point of view, but also by the blatant deception. Check this out (caps and bold are theirs):

Melinda Loomis
This is your THIRD RENEWAL NOTICE

Melinda
AVOID SERVICE
INTERRUPTION:
RENEW TODAY!

RE: SUBSCRIPTION STATUS: EXPIRING

This is the THIRD NOTICE we have sent about your (name of magazine) subscription. We have yet to hear from you.

The next paragraph advises that, "Because time is now a factor..." they are generously offering a renewal savings deal. There's just a couple of problems with that.

First of all, am I being hypersensitive because I find this tone unnecessary and unacceptable? Seriously, who wrote this? Who thought it was a good idea to use address a customer like this. I have a customer service background, and I would NEVER have taken this tone with a client. EVER.

Second, and here's the real kicker: The reason they have yet to hear from me is because this magazine doesn't renew until OCTOBER. It is currently mid-May. I ordered this subscription last September. And this is the THIRD renewal notice they've sent me? And they have the nerve to state that my "subscription status" is EXPIRING? It is nowhere NEAR expiring. This is a blatant lie. But if I hadn't checked, I would have likely sent the check out the same day.

Another thing I noticed is that one thing they DIDN'T include on this extremely important notice is the actual subscription renewal date. You would think that would be worth mentioning. That they purposely omitted it just adds to the deception, and isn't how I want to be treated as a paying customer.

On the back of the notice there's information I hadn't been previously aware of. They have a money-back policy. "We guarantee you may write to cancel your subscription at any time, for any reason, and that you will receive a full refund for all unmailed issues". I've never cancelled a magazine pre-renewal, if I don't want it anymore I just let it go at renewal time. But after this notice, I'm thinking of taking them up on their guarantee. This is a lifestyle magazine, not something important like a writing magazine. I can live without it if I have to, and I'm giving serious thought to doing just that.

Dad's :( Day

Fourteen years ago today, I was in beautiful Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, and my Dad died. Time marches on.

Everyone in my family was really young when I was born, so I had most of my relatives around for most of my life, including well into adulthood. I don't miss any one person in particular, what I miss is having everyone around. Kind of wish I'd spent more time with them.

Pictures, of course:

Week 2 of the May 70's Dance Party has come and gone

Monday, May 5: "Magic" - Pilot (if you're going to be a one-hit wonder, make it a memorable one)

Tuesday, May 6: "Young Hearts Run Free" - Candi Staton

Wednesday, May 7: "Rock Steady" - Aretha Franklin

Thursday, May 8: "Do Ya" - Electric Light Orchestra

Friday, May 9: "Born to Be Alive" - Patrick Hernandez (I will never be without this song)

Saturday, May 10: "Saturday Night" - Bay City Rollers

Sunday, May 11: "Fox on the Run" - Sweet

Already had: Magic, Born to Be Alive, Saturday Night

Threw money at iTunes for: Do Ya, Fox on the Run

BTW, I tried putting together an 80's Dance Party Month playlist and there was so much great music in that decade I could easily do an entire year of 80's songs. I have a lot of respect for how hard it must have been to pick only 31 songs from another great musical decade.

MUST...POSSESS...

So many of the Hallmark Christmas ornaments are just absolute works of art. Not to mention the ideas they come up with for ornaments is really clever.

I have this Jaws ornament from years ago. In fact, it's on my fireplace mantel year round since I live by the beach. And now today, I stumbled across this absolutely awesome upcoming Jaws ornament:

When you tilt the ornament it changes from the original billboard to the vandalized billboard. SQUEEEE!!!!

I can't find it on Hallmark's website yet, but I will be there ready to give them my money the minute this thing becomes available.

Want to take a writing class taught by Agatha Christie? Of course you do, and so do I.

BBC Maestro, which I would describe as a British version of MasterClass, has brought the Queen of Mystery back to life to share her writing secrets: Writing with Agatha Christie.

From the course description:

The course has been curated by leading Christie scholars Dr Mark Aldridge, Michelle Kazmer, Gray Robert Brown, and Jamie Bernthal-Hooker, who have painstakingly reconstructed Agatha’s philosophy on writing, using her own words.

For the first time, audiences will hear Agatha Christie impart her insights on story structure, cast creation, plot twists, red herrings, and the art of suspense, drawn directly from her own writings and archival interviews.

According to this Deadline article, the BBC used a combination of AI and actress Vivien Keene to bring Christie to life. The course consists of 11 lessons and 12 exercises, and runs 2-1/2 hours. You can purchase the course as a stand-alone for $89, or subscribe to BBC Maestro for $120 for all-access for a year, which also provides courses from live people including Lee Child, Ken Follett, Harlan Coben, Bill Lawrence, Brian Cox, Sir Tim Rice, Mark Ronson, and that's just in the creative arts. They also offer courses in Food & Drink, Business, Wellness, and Art & Design.

I have two college classes (complete with live professors) going on right now, but I'm thinking once the semester is completed this will be my next course.

I also think it will be interesting to see how people react to the idea of someone like Christie being recreated by AI. AI itself is an extremely touchy issue with a lot of people, especially writers. Given the people behind it and the apparent care put into it, I'm willing to at least give this a shot. I guess I'll find out how I feel about it this summer.

That's so Kings

I take no pleasure in reporting that the Los Angeles Kings have been bounced out of the first round of the NHL playoffs by the Edmonton Oilers for the fourth consecutive year. Not joking. About either. Fourth consecutive year bounced out of the first round, fourth consecutive year at the hands of the Oilers.

It was really looking like this was going to be the year LAK broke the Oiler curse. They had the league-best home record and actually had a pretty good year, even with the absence of Drew Doughty for a chunk of the season. And with home ice advantage for the first time in decades, they slaughtered the Oilers in the first two games of the series. But Edmonton also enjoyed home ice, taking both games in Alberta. Then they won game five in L.A. And tonight they defeated the Kings for the fourth consecutive game, and just like that, LAK is eliminated from the playoffs. AGAIN.

Gotta give props to Edmonton. After two shellackings in L.A., they came back and won four straight games to advance to the second round, where they'll meet (and hopefully fall to) the Vegas Golden Knights.

This is yet another massive fail by the Kings. The funny thing was that after the first two wins, I was hearing fans talking Rob Blake as GM of the year and praising the heck out of coach Jim Hiller. But it was a very temporary high pedestal, which Edmonton destroyed in just four games.

Ownership needs to clean house now. Front office, coach, clear it out and start over. Get some new blood in there. Because as Dave Chappelle would say...

...and the same old isn't working for the Kings. It hasn't been working for years. Hopefully something will finally give.

This game also marked the final appearance of long-time Kings announcer/legend Nick Nickson, who has retired. What a way to go out.

Updated 5/5/25: Blake is gone. Now do Hiller. Don't forget the rest of the front office.

Typical politicians

Do as we say, not as we do. Also, billionaires are evil (not us, the other ones).

Jerks.

I can't believe people actually fall for this.
