Happy Birthday to my Mom

My Mom would be 82 today. Crazy to think in just a couple months it will be six years that she's been gone. 

Public Domain hijinks ensue

Well, that didn't take long.

 

Yesterday, January 1, 2024, was the long-awaited day when the earliest version of Mickey Mouse (the one introduced in Steamboat Willie) fell into the public domain and if you were waiting to see how that would play out, you didn't have to wait long. It turns out there were a lot of people who had been preparing for this day well in advance and were ready to go as soon as the clock struck midnight.

First up, there's already a Mickey Mouse slasher flick (in the vein of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey) ready to go: Mickey's Mouse Trap.

And another one coming in hot: 

 

Steamboat Mickey in a first person shooter game. While not a fan of this sort of thing, not gonna lie, they did a bang-up (😏) job on the era animation.

Another game trailer: Infestation, with reference to Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey in their description. That movie may have been a critical bomb, but apparently it's set a perverse standard for co-opting beloved childhood characters when they hit the public domain.

Another year in the books

I ended up not buying it, but if you've ever wanted the Breyer version of Secretariat, he's still available.

Tidings of great joy

This is what I would do if I was filthy rich:

For starters, save this place. Maintain it and save it from development: Esotouric's Monastery of the Angels Advocacy Campaign.

According to the Esotouric article (and given how Los Angeles destroys its history, I have no reason to believing otherwise) the historic monastery is being marketed as a teardown to developers. Although the idea of a historic Catholic monastery in the Hollywood Hills seems odd, it's been there for years and the land - up in the hills just off Gower, north of Franklin Avenue and the 101 Freeway - is no doubt incredibly valuable. And since developers and politicians only care about money and not the rapidly disappearing beauty that was once Los Angeles - I have a terrible feeling that no matter how hard Esotouric, LA Conservancy, or anyone else fights for the monastery - deep-pocketed developers are going to have their way and the monastery will be demolished for a modern development (ugh).

 

No kidding - I would live there. Not destroy it.

 

The whole state, county, and city are so corrupt that even if I was filthy rich (I'm talking Bill Gates/Mark Zuckerberg/Jeff Bezos/Steven Spielberg/Nancy Pelosi/insert name of any other filthy rich person here combined) and wanted to save this place, I'm pretty sure that because I would be using my riches to preserve important Los Angeles history and not line the pockets of local politicians and big shots, I would still lose this place to developers. I'd be ruled against by crooked, bought pols (aren't they all).

I will support this fight, but I don't have a good feeling about this. Decent people who don't want places like this bulldozed aren't in control, in fact we really have no say at all.

 

Also, it closed on Christmas Eve. COLD.

This schedule for Christmas Day was posted on the Turner Classic Movies Fan Site on Facebook, and I wasn't alone in wondering who the heck programmed this and/or why. A lot of the comments bore out that I wasn't the only one who thought some of the choices were odd for Christmas.

Fortunately, TBS and TNT are embarking on their annual "24 Hours of A Christmas Story" in a few hours, so there will be plenty of quality Christmas viewing available for those of us who want it.

A fond farewell to a Los Angeles legend and another part of my L.A. youth/early adulthood is gone forever

Legendary Los Angeles radio DJ Jim Ladd has passed away and taken a huge chunk of L.A. music history and life with him.

This one really hurts. Can someone please invent a time machine so I can go back to the 80's? ASAP, please!
